Landmark Developments

Bridge City & Bridge City Station

One of the most significant projects the group worked on in the past 25 years was the Bridge City Shopping Centre in KwaMashu, on the outskirts of the Durban metropolitan. In addition to the shopping centre, Crowie Holdings was responsible for developing a subterranean station for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa and intermodal bus and taxi facility.

Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital

A few years later, the group, together with Grinaker-LTA, was awarded a tender to build a 500-bed hospital adjacent to Bridge City. In 2018, Crowie Holdings purchased Grinaker-LTA’s 70% stake in the project and completed the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital in 2023, an 86,000 m2 State-of-the-art hospital, with the most hi-tech and specialised medical facility in the region, serving more than 1.5 million people within the communities of Inanda, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma.

The group is currently constructing another of its flagship projects in Polokwane, Limpopo, the Limpopo Central Academic Hospital, a transformative development that will provide tertiary healthcare services to the province. This 488-bed hospital will offer over 20 essential medical services, including surgery, trauma care, oncology, and neonatal care. It will deliver world-class healthcare to residents of Limpopo, eliminating the need for patients to travel to Gauteng for specialised treatments. The timely delivery of this facility, will provide advanced medical services and also create significant employment opportunities in Polokwane and surrounding areas.

Other notable hospital projects within the Crowie group include the design and construction of a 220-bed hospital in Middelburg and the Bara500 intensive care unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, which was constructed in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic. The earthworks were completed in four weeks and the entire construction (Alternate Building Technology) was completed in six months.

The Senqu River Bridge

The Senqu River Bridge, situated in Lesotho’s Mokhotlong District, is a landmark infrastructure develop-ment delivered as part of Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. Valued at R2.4 billion, the bridge plays a vital role in enhancing regional connectivity and supporting long-term water security between South Africa and Lesotho. Measuring 825 metres in length and rising 90 metres above the Senqu River, it is the largest of three bridges constructed under the programme. The structure ensures the continued operation of the A1 route between Mokhotlong and Maseru, which would otherwise be disrupted by the Polihali Reservoir. It forms part of a wider scheme that includes the 165-metre-high Polihali Dam and a 38-kilometre transfer tunnel to the Katse Dam, ultimately increasing water supply to South Africa’s Vaal River System from 780 million to 1,270 million cubic metres per annum, while also supporting hydroelectric power generation in Lesotho. Designed to address the challenges of mountainous terrain, the Senqu River Bridge is the first of its kind in Lesotho and demonstrates advanced engineering expertise.

Enza Construction, in joint venture with Webuild S.p.A., Raubex Construction and Sigma Construction, contributed to the successful delivery of this flagship project, which combines technical excellence with meaningful socio-economic impact.

Seriti Green’s Ummbila Emoyeni Vunumoya Main Transmission Station (MTS)

Tractionel’s delivery of one of the country’s first large scale Main Transmission Stations (MTS) is particularly noteworthy, as the development of grid infrastructure has traditionally been the sole domain of Eskom. Tractionel has been accredited as engineering, procurement and construction provider for Eskom’s National Transmission Company of South Africa, which opens the door to new projects in the 400kV transmission space, both as a contractor and a service provider to international operators looking to enter the local market. Tractionel plans to expand it’s capabilities in the 400kV and 765kV transmission sectors to deliver larger-scale projects.

The Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Plant

The Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Plant, situated near Upington in the Northern Cape province was an Engineer, Procure & Construct (EPC) contract for the design and construction of a 50MW solar power facility. Commissioned by ACWA Power International, a consortium of companies comprising Sener, TSK, Acciona and Crowie Concessions, the EPC Contractor, the project featured one of the largest thermal energy storage systems ever built for a CSP plant of its size and capacity, enabling extended energy supply beyond daylight hours. With a project value of R3.3 billion and a construction duration of 30 months, the plant was successfully completed in December 2015, contributing significantly to South Africa’s renewable energy infrastructure and energy security goals.

Gautrain

As part of the iconic Gautrain project in Gauteng, Tractionel Enterprise was awarded a R242 million contract by Bombela Electrical and Mechanical Works (Pty) Ltd to design, supply, install, test and commission the Overhead Contact Distribution System (OCDS) across the 170 km rail network. The Scope covered both open routes and tunnel sections and introduced a first-of-its-kind conductor rail system in Africa. Work commenced in August 2008, with key sections between OR Tambo International Airport, Midrand, and Sandton completed in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The project reached full completion in June 2012, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s public transport infrastructure.

Statistics South Africa Head Office

The group delivered the head office for Statistics South Africa through a Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) with the Department of Statistics South Africa. This flagship development involved the design, construction and delivery of a state-of-the-art office complex in Pretoria, Gauteng, to accommodate approximately 1,400 employees. In addition to modern office facilities, the project included a purpose-build Data Processing Centre to support the department’s core operational functions. Valued at R1.3 billion and completed within an 18-month timeframe, the project reached completion in July 2016 and stands as a significant infrastructure investment in support of South Africa’s National data capability.
